How to apply for the Master of Music Program in the SIUC School of Music -

THE FOLLOWING CHRONOLOGY SHOULD HELP YOU AS YOU MAKE YOUR APPLICATION TO THE MASTER OF MUSIC PROGRAM

1. Fill out the School of Music Application
IT'S FREE, and it will get your application started. Go to the following link; then PRINT the application, FILL it out, and MAIL it to the School of Music address on the application, and at the bottom of this page.

2. Make the formal application to the SIUC Graduate School
Go to the following link and complete the university application.  
(This application is all done on line; NOTE: The Graduate School will not process your application until you pay the appropriate fee.):

NOTE: In order to be accpeted into the MM program, you must complete BOTH applications.
(The first is for acceptance into the School of Music, the second is for acceptance into the university.)

3. Make CONTACT with the School of Music Faculty.
This link will take you to a list of all the faculty in the School of Music; Choose the appropriate instructor and, if you wish, send them an e-mail - THUS - Making Contact!   They will be happy to hear from you, and they can discuss and help you plan your audition, or other assessment.

4. Audition or other assessment:
The assessment process for acceptance into the SIUC School of Music Master of Music program is done on an individual basis, i.e. there are not specific dates for auditions, interviews, etc.
Making contact with our faculty will initiate the specifics for your acceptance. this may include an audition, live or recorded (YouTube, CD, DVD, etc.) or other assessment, such as scores and recordings for composers, scholarly papers for music Historians and Music Educators, etc.

5. Submit Materials In Support of Your Application
YOU MUST SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING MATERIALS IN ORDER TO COMPLETE YOUR APPLICATION:

*****A COMPLETE SET OF TRANSCRIPTS*
You must have your transcripts sent directly from your undergraduate institution(s).  The university will not process your transcripts if you send a copy yourself.

*****THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION*
Please have three (3) letters of recommendation sent from past teachers and/or music professionals, who know and can assess you and your abilities.  There is NOT a particular form for these recommendations; merely request that your writers send letters addressing their expectation for you to do scholarly and creative work at the graduate level, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
NOTE: It is better if these letters come directly from the recommender, although it is not required.

6. In addition, INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS Must Also:

*****TAKE THE TOEFL*
All International students must take the TOEFL examination in English proficiency and have the scores sent directly to the Southern Illinois University Carbondale Graduate School.
NOTE: If your undergraduate degree was granted in an English speaking country, you are exempt from this exam.

*****FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE FORM*

Financial Assistance

There are several ways that you can help finance your post-graduate degree, but you must apply for them, and they are very competitive.



GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIPS
If awarded, in return for teaching, assisting teaching, clerical or other work, you will receive a complete tuition waiver PLUS a monthly stipend.
TO APPLY: The Application to be considered for a Graduate Assistantship is part of the School of Music Application (No. 1, above) -- just complete where indicated.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING FOR A GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP IS

MASTER'S FELLOWSHIPS
A FELLOWSHIP includes a full tuition waiver and stipend (without additional responsibilities).
